## What is warehouse hiring in Phoenix?

Warehouse hiring in Phoenix is the job of filling picker, forklift operator and material handler openings in a metro where 56,420 people work as hand laborers and material movers and 42,650 as stockers and order fillers, according to BLS data for May 2025 in the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro. Only 10,250 people in the metro work as forklift operators, a small pool for the number of large buildings opening west of the city. Amazon opened three 1-million-square-foot fulfillment centers in Glendale, Goodyear and Buckeye in 2024, and KeHE Distributors runs a half-million-square-foot grocery distribution center in Goodyear.

Classet's AI interviewer, Joy, phones or web-calls a Phoenix applicant the moment they apply, asks about shift, forklift certification, lifting and heat on the dock, and sends your team a summary, the transcript and the recording. Who gets invited to orientation at a Phoenix site is decided by a person on your HR team. West Valley distribution centers, 3PLs and the staffing agencies serving them use Joy for overnight shifts and peak ramps.

For a West Valley distribution center paying near the $48,770 forklift median, the grid means more than half of the applications for a night-shift opening arrive after the HR office closes, and Joy interviews those applicants the moment they apply. Across Classet accounts, 88% of candidates who start the phone screen finish within 20 minutes of applying, and 88% of the 10,167 candidates who rated a Joy interview rated the experience positively. In a metro with only 10,250 forklift operators, calling a certified applicant the same evening is how a site gets the first conversation.

## How much do Phoenix warehouse workers earn?

Phoenix pays more than the national rate for warehouse floor work. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics wage survey for May 2025, hand laborers and material movers in the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro earned a median of $44,950 a year, about $21.61 an hour, compared with a national median of $19.35. Forklift operators earned $48,770, about $23.45 an hour, against $22.32 nationally. Stockers and order fillers earned $37,730 (about $18.14), packers $37,840, and shipping, receiving and inventory clerks $45,840.

The 10th percentile Phoenix forklift operator earned $39,240 and the 90th percentile earned $63,110. A Phoenix laborer earns more than $2 an hour above the national laborer median, so a West Valley site posting national-average pay for a material handler job starts behind the local market. With 10,250 forklift operators in the metro, the operator with a current card on a reach truck usually has more than one offer on the table by the end of the week.

## Where are Phoenix's warehouse jobs?

Phoenix's warehouse jobs are concentrated in the West Valley, along Loop 303 and the I-10 corridor through Glendale, Goodyear and Buckeye. Amazon opened three West Valley fulfillment centers in 2024, each about 1 million square feet, according to the Arizona Technology Council. The Buckeye site opened in September 2024, and the Glendale site at 15301 W. Northern Ave. opened on October 23, 2024. Each building can hold up to 2,000 employees at full capacity, about 6,000 jobs across the three, and each had hired about 300 people by late October 2024.

In July 2024, ABC15 reported Amazon's plan to hire 500 workers for the Goodyear building at the Prologis 303 Business Park near Cotton Lane and Camelback Road. KeHE Distributors opened its 16th distribution center in Goodyear in October 2021, a half-million-square-foot site with more than 270 jobs supplying natural and specialty groceries to retailers such as Sprouts Farmers Market and Albertsons Safeway. A smaller 3PL nearby recruits from the same applicant pool as those four buildings.

## Where do Phoenix employers find trained warehouse workers?

ARIZONA@WORK Maricopa County is the public workforce system for the Phoenix metro, and the West Valley has two of its locations. The main career center is at 4425 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale, and a second site is at 14140 W. McDowell Rd. in Goodyear, a few miles from the Loop 303 distribution buildings. Through its Business Services Program, Maricopa County connects employers with job seekers, runs job fairs, and points applicants toward training funded under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which provides $12,392,921 in Department of Labor funding for the county's adult, dislocated worker and youth programs.

For a warehouse employer, a career-center referral is often an applicant with a new forklift card and little time on a truck. Joy asks which trucks the applicant has run, for how many hours, and who issued the card, so the site lead sees training history before booking orientation.

## What Joy does on a Phoenix warehouse application

Joy is Classet's AI interviewer, and a Phoenix setup follows the [warehouse hiring playbook](/use-cases/warehouse) with questions for a desert site. First, your team writes the must-haves once per role: shift, start date, 50-pound lifting, forklift certification type, RF scanner use, and whether the applicant can work a loading dock or trailer in a Phoenix July. Joy then phones or web-calls the applicant the moment they apply, and texts a link when the call is missed. During the interview Joy asks each question, records the answer, and marks every knockout as met or not met.

The structured summary, the transcript and the recording go to Hiring Hub, or to your ATS through ATS Sync, which connects to 95 applicant tracking systems. Each must-have comes back Met or Not met, and Fast-track, if you turn it on, flags the strongest fits for a first call; nobody is moved or turned away by software. A site HR lead reads the summary, replays the recording if an answer is unclear, and decides who comes to orientation. Candidates who clear your must-haves can get a text with your open times and book on their phone through [Scheduling](/scheduling), available by request. [Call to Apply](/call-to-apply) adds a hiring number on the truck or sign that Joy answers 24/7. Phoenix applicants can opt out of the AI interview at any point and be connected to someone on your staff instead.

## Phoenix warehouse roles Joy screens

Joy screens the floor, dock and yard roles West Valley warehouses hire for, with the questions your site writes.

Forklift operators, at a $48,770 Phoenix median, confirm certification date and issuer, the trucks they have run (sit-down, stand-up reach, order picker, clamp), and high-racking or dock experience. Hand laborers and material movers, 56,420 people at a $44,950 median, are asked about trailer unloading, lifting limits and outdoor work when dock temperatures pass 100 degrees.

Stockers, pickers and packers cover RF scanner use, pick rate at the last job and weekend availability, while shipping and receiving clerks, at a $45,840 median, name the WMS they have used and their cycle-count experience. For dispatchers, Joy asks which transportation management system the applicant has used and how many trucks they dispatched in a shift. The hiring call on a Phoenix stocker, clerk or dispatcher stays with your team, who read the knockout results first.

## Frequently asked questions

### How fast can we hire forklift operators in Phoenix?

Hiring speed for a Phoenix forklift opening depends on reaching certified applicants before larger West Valley employers do. The metro has 10,250 forklift operators at a $48,770 median, according to BLS data for May 2025, and Amazon's three West Valley fulfillment centers can each hold up to 2,000 employees at full capacity. Joy calls the applicant the moment they apply, including late at night after a shift ends.

Across Classet accounts, 55% of applications arrive outside business hours and 88% of candidates who start the phone screen finish within 20 minutes of applying. The summary is in Hiring Hub or your ATS by the time the site HR lead arrives. Your team confirms the card at orientation and makes the offer, so time to hire after the screen depends on your scheduling.

### Why do Phoenix warehouses pay more than the national rate?

Phoenix warehouse pay sits above the national rate for floor work. According to BLS data for May 2025, Phoenix-area hand laborers and material movers earned a median of $44,950 a year, about $21.61 an hour, against a $19.35 national median. Phoenix forklift operators earned about $23.45 an hour against $22.32 nationally. With three Amazon fulfillment centers and the KeHE distribution center hiring in the same West Valley corridor, applicants compare offers.

Joy can ask each applicant for the pay rate at the last job and the lowest rate they would accept, and both answers appear in the summary next to the knockout results. Joy records answers and does not negotiate pay or make offers; a hiring manager does.

### Can Joy screen for heat tolerance on a Phoenix loading dock?

Heat screening is a short set of interview questions about outdoor and dock work, and Joy can ask them for any Phoenix site with trailer loading, yard work or parts of the building without air conditioning. The metro employs 56,420 hand laborers and material movers, the group that loads and unloads trailers on those docks. Your team writes the question in plain terms, for example whether the applicant has worked a dock or trailer in summer temperatures above 100 degrees, for how many hours per shift, and in what role.

Joy records the answer in the summary and transcript. Joy does not judge anyone's fitness and does not ask medical questions; your team sets the job requirements and a person decides. The question sits alongside the forklift certification and shift knockouts, so a West Valley site lead reading 40 summaries sees the dock experience next to the certification answer.

### Does ARIZONA@WORK work with Joy for Phoenix warehouse hiring?

ARIZONA@WORK Maricopa County and Joy are separate, and they fit together through the job posting. ARIZONA@WORK runs career centers at 4425 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale and 14140 W. McDowell Rd. in Goodyear, and its Business Services Program connects employers with job seekers. When a career-center client applies to your posting, or uses a Joy interview link handed out at a job fair, Joy interviews that applicant the moment they apply.

The summary shows the applicant's forklift card, the issuing program and the trucks covered, so the site lead can see which referrals need more seat time. Maricopa County's workforce programs draw on $12,392,921 in federal WIOA funding, and Classet does not receive or manage any of it.

### Does Joy work with our ATS or staffing agency in Phoenix?

Yes. Hiring Hub is the built-in option, with a direct Indeed connection, applicant import and a Kanban pipeline, and a single Goodyear or Glendale site without an ATS can start there. For West Valley employers on Workday, UKG, iCIMS or a different ATS, ATS Sync (95 applicant tracking systems supported) sends the transcript, recording, summary and knockout results to the candidate's file.

Staffing agencies supplying West Valley DCs connect the same way through Bullhorn or Avionte. A 3PL near Loop 303 running a peak ramp with two agencies sees the same knockout fields for a forklift applicant from any source, and 88% of candidates who start the phone screen finish within 20 minutes of applying. The [Endries case study](/blog/case-study-endries-international) covers one distributor's ATS connection.

### What does AI phone screening cost for a Phoenix warehouse?

Standalone Classet plans start at $249 a month billed annually ($349 month-to-month) with 50 completed interviews included. Scale costs $999 a month billed annually ($1,399 month-to-month) with 250 completed interviews. Interviews beyond the included number cost $5 each on the standalone plan and $4 on Scale, so a Goodyear DC running a holiday ramp pays for the extra interviews and keeps its tier.

A Phoenix applicant who never answers costs you nothing, since billing covers completed interviews only. ATS-integrated deployments for multi-site operations start at $1,995 a month and are scoped in a discovery call based on volume and the systems involved. For comparison, one Phoenix forklift operator at the $48,770 median costs about $4,060 a month in wages.
