## What is warehouse hiring in Chicago?

Warehouse hiring in Chicago is the job of filling picker, forklift operator and material handler openings in a metro with 157,920 hand laborers and material movers, 79,850 stockers and order fillers and 22,320 forklift operators, according to BLS data for May 2025 in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro. Much of the hiring happens in Will County, where Walmart runs a 1.1 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Joliet and two rail terminals at the CenterPoint Intermodal Center move over 3.3 million containers a year.

Classet's AI interviewer, Joy, phones or web-calls a Chicago-area applicant the moment they apply, asks about shift, forklift certification, lifting and cold-dock work, and sends your team a summary, the transcript and the recording. A person on your team decides who comes to orientation. Distribution centers, cold storage operators and staffing agencies along I-55 and I-80 use Joy for overnight shifts and for the peak ramp.

For a Will County distribution center paying near the $47,950 forklift median, the grid reads like this: more than half of applications for a third-shift opening arrive while the HR office is closed, and Joy interviews those applicants the moment they apply. Across Classet accounts, 88% of candidates who start the phone screen finish within 20 minutes of applying, and 88% of the 10,167 candidates who rated a Joy interview rated it positively. In a metro with 157,920 material movers, the site that calls back the same night gets the first conversation with the applicant.

## How much do Chicago warehouse workers earn?

Chicago forklift operators earned a median of $47,950 a year in May 2025, about $23.05 an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics wage survey for the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro. The national forklift median is $22.32 an hour, so a Chicago site pays roughly 73 cents an hour above the national rate. Hand laborers and material movers earned a median of $40,550, close to $19.50 an hour, and stockers and order fillers earned $38,450, about $18.49.

Shipping, receiving and inventory clerks earned $47,740, nearly level with forklift pay, while packers earned $36,180. The metro has 22,320 forklift operators against 157,920 material movers, roughly one certified operator for every seven people moving freight by hand. An employer who needs a reach-truck driver on nights is fishing in a pool of about 22,000 people, and the 90th percentile operator already earns $63,520, so the first call often matters as much as the posted rate.

## Why is Will County the center of Chicago warehouse hiring?

Will County is the center of Chicago warehouse hiring because I-80 and I-55 cross there, next to two rail terminals that together rank fifth in the nation for international container volume. According to the Will County Center for Economic Development, BNSF's Logistics Park and Union Pacific's Global IV at the CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Joliet and Elwood handle over 3.3 million twenty-foot containers a year. Walmart opened a 1.1 million-square-foot fulfillment center at 3501 S. Brandon Road in Joliet in September 2022, with a goal of hiring more than 1,000 full-time associates to ship orders across Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Up I-55, Amazon runs a 750,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Romeoville, according to a December 2025 Trucking Dive report. In January 2025 the Herald-News reported plans from Arcadia Cold Storage & Logistics for a 293,000-square-foot cold storage building on Millsdale Road in Joliet, expected to employ at least 75 people. A forklift applicant in Joliet can reach several of these sites in one shift change.

## Where do Chicago-area forklift operators train?

Forklift training in the Joliet area runs through Joliet Junior College, the community college for most of Will County. JJC's FORK 100 Forklift Training & Certification course is four days, six hours a day, for $849, and covers walkie riders, sit-down trucks and narrow-aisle stand-up trucks. Graduates earn the National Safety Council certification for industrial lift trucks, and the next session runs October 19 to 22, 2026, at the Weitendorf Agricultural Education Center on Laraway Road in Joliet.

The course description notes the JJC district has become a distribution center for the Midwest over the last decade. For supervisors and inventory roles, JJC also offers Global Supply Chain Management certificates covering transportation, distribution and cargo security. A FORK 100 graduate often has a fresh card and limited hours on a reach truck. Joy asks which trucks the applicant has run and for how long, so the site lead can see training hours next to work history.

## What Joy does on a Chicago warehouse application

Joy is Classet's AI interviewer, and a Chicago warehouse setup uses the [warehouse hiring playbook](/use-cases/warehouse) with questions for the local floor. Your team writes the must-haves once per role, for example overnight availability, 50-pound lifting, forklift certification type, freezer or cold-dock tolerance for a Joliet cold storage site, and whether the applicant can get to Elwood for a 4 a.m. start. Joy then phones or web-calls the applicant the moment they apply, and texts a link when nobody picks up. Joy asks each question, records the answer, and marks each knockout as met or not met.

A structured summary, the transcript and the recording go to Hiring Hub, or to your ATS through ATS Sync, which connects to 95 applicant tracking systems. Each must-have comes back Met or Not met, and Fast-track, if you turn it on, flags the strongest fits for a first call; nobody is moved or turned away by software. The site HR lead reads the summary, listens to the recording when an answer needs a second pass, and decides who comes to orientation. Candidates who clear your must-haves can get a text with your open times and book on their phone through [Scheduling](/scheduling), available by request. [Call to Apply](/call-to-apply) adds a hiring number on the truck or sign that Joy answers 24/7. Applicants who would rather talk to a person can opt out.

## Chicago warehouse roles Joy screens

Joy screens the dock, floor and cold-storage roles Chicago-area warehouses hire for, using the questions your site sets.

Forklift operators, at a $47,950 Chicago median, confirm certification date and issuer, which trucks they have run (sit-down, walkie rider, narrow-aisle stand-up, order picker), and dock or high-bay racking experience. Stockers and order fillers, 79,850 people at a $38,450 median, are asked about RF scanners, voice picking, pick rate at the last job and standing a 10-hour shift.

Material movers and loaders answer questions on trailer unloading, container work near the Joliet rail yards and lifting limits. Cold storage associates for a site like Arcadia's Joliet building cover freezer tolerance, insulated PPE and shift length in a Chicago January. Shipping and receiving clerks, at a $47,740 median, name the WMS they have used. A person on your team reads the knockout results and decides.

## Frequently asked questions

### How fast can we hire warehouse workers in Joliet and Will County?

Hiring speed in Joliet and Will County depends on how fast an employer reaches applicants who are also applying to Walmart, Amazon and the 3PLs along I-80 and I-55. Walmart alone set a goal of more than 1,000 full-time hires for its Joliet fulfillment center, so a smaller DC is competing for the same weekend applicants. Joy calls the applicant the moment they apply, including at 2 a.m. after a second shift ends.

Across Classet accounts, 55% of applications arrive outside business hours and 88% of candidates who start the phone screen finish within 20 minutes of applying. The summary is in Hiring Hub or your ATS before the HR office opens. Your team still confirms the forklift card at orientation and makes the offer, so the time to hire after the screen is set by your own scheduling.

### What do Chicago-area warehouses pay forklift operators?

Chicago-area forklift operators earned a median of $47,950 a year in May 2025, about $23.05 an hour, according to BLS data for the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro. The 10th percentile earned $38,200 and the 90th percentile earned $63,520. The national forklift median is $22.32 an hour, so a Chicago posting at the national rate sits below what the typical local operator earns.

Joy can ask each applicant for the pay rate at the last job and the minimum rate they would accept, and both answers appear in the summary next to the knockout results. A hiring manager can then compare the applicant's expectation to the site's pay band before booking orientation. Joy records the answers and does not negotiate or make offers.

### Does Joy screen for cold storage and freezer roles in the Chicago area?

Yes. Cold storage screens are standard for Chicago-area sites, where freezer work and winter docks add questions a dry warehouse skips. In January 2025, the Herald-News reported plans by Arcadia Cold Storage & Logistics for a 293,000-square-foot cold storage building in Joliet with at least 75 jobs, and a December 2025 Trucking Dive report on Will County names Lineage refrigerated warehouses among the area's notable sites.

For a freezer role, Joy asks whether the applicant has worked below zero, for how long per shift, which insulated PPE they have worn, and which trucks they ran in the cold. Freezer tolerance can be a knockout so applicants who have never worked cold storage move to a separate stage. A supervisor confirms the details at orientation, and a person on your team decides.

### Does Joy check certifications from Joliet Junior College's forklift course?

Joy asks about the certification and records the answer; Joy does not check a registry or verify the card. A graduate of Joliet Junior College's four-day, $849 FORK 100 course holds a National Safety Council certification for industrial lift trucks and has driven walkie riders, sit-down trucks and narrow-aisle stand-up trucks. Joy asks which program issued the card, the date, which trucks the applicant has run and roughly how many hours on each.

The answers appear in the summary and transcript in Hiring Hub or your ATS. Your team can make a current certification a knockout, so applicants without a card move to a separate stage before anyone reads a summary. In a metro with 22,320 forklift operators, the knockout keeps the review list short. A supervisor checks the physical card at orientation.

### Does Joy work with the staffing agencies Chicago warehouses use?

Joy is used on both sides of a Chicago warehouse staffing arrangement. Many Will County sites use Joy for direct hires while agencies cover flex headcount, and staffing agencies also license Joy to screen applicants for client orders. ATS Sync writes the summary, transcript, recording and knockout results into Bullhorn, Avionte or another of the 95 applicant tracking systems ATS Sync connects to. Sites without an ATS use Hiring Hub, which includes a direct Indeed connection, applicant import and a Kanban pipeline.

A 3PL in Romeoville running a peak ramp with two agencies sees the same knockout fields for every forklift applicant, whichever agency sent them, and 88% of candidates who start the phone screen finish within 20 minutes of applying. Industrial distributor Endries International described its ATS connection in the [Endries case study](/blog/case-study-endries-international).

### What does AI phone screening cost for a Chicago warehouse?

Standalone Classet plans start at $249 a month billed annually ($349 month-to-month) with 50 completed interviews included. Scale is $999 a month billed annually ($1,399 month-to-month) with 250 completed interviews. Extra interviews cost $5 each on the standalone plan and $4 on Scale, so a Joliet DC running a holiday ramp pays for the added interviews and stays on the same tier.

Only completed interviews are billed, and unanswered calls cost nothing. ATS-integrated deployments for multi-site operations start at $1,995 a month and are scoped in a discovery call based on volume and systems. For scale, one Chicago-area forklift operator at the $47,950 median costs about $4,000 a month in wages.
