## What is skilled trades recruiting in Dallas-Fort Worth?

Skilled trades recruiting in Dallas-Fort Worth is the job of hiring electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, carpenters and laborers in a metro where hyperscale data center campuses and residential service companies bid for the same licensed people. The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro employs 20,930 electricians, 11,980 plumbers and pipefitters and 10,910 HVAC mechanics, according to May 2025 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Classet's AI interviewer, Joy, phones or web-calls the applicant the moment they apply and covers the first-call questions a DFW service manager or superintendent would ask: Texas license class, EPA 608 type, data center, commercial or residential experience, which side of the Metroplex the applicant can reach and the earliest start date.

Joy delivers a structured summary, the transcript and the recording to Hiring Hub or your ATS. A person on your team reads the summary and decides who gets the in-person interview.

## Results DFW contractors can expect

Read together, these numbers describe a DFW contractor's Monday. The metro employs 20,930 electricians and pays HVAC mechanics a median of $59,560, so a residential shop in Plano or Arlington is bidding for the same licensed techs as the data center crews in Red Oak. More than half of the weekend's applicants applied after hours, which is when a tech finishing a service call looks at Indeed. Joy calls them the moment they apply, and 88% of the people who start that phone screen finish it within 20 minutes.

The service manager starts the week with a summary for each electrician and HVAC applicant, showing license type, EPA 608 status, truck and tool ownership, and the days they can start, instead of a voicemail list from Saturday. Candidates rate the call well, too: 88% of 10,167 ratings were positive, so the first conversation with your shop does not cost you the applicant.

## DFW trade wages and employment

BLS counts 20,930 electricians in Dallas-Fort Worth at a May 2025 median wage of $59,010, below the $63,190 national median for the trade. The metro's 11,980 plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters earn a $61,250 median against $63,800 nationally. HVAC is closer to the national figure: 10,910 mechanics and installers at a $59,560 median, compared with $61,010 across the country, and the 90th percentile reaches $84,880. DFW also employs 29,670 construction laborers at a $43,960 median and 9,480 carpenters at $48,740.

Those medians sit 2% to 7% under the national figures, and the 90th percentile for electricians, $81,660, shows how far the top of the market pays above the middle. A residential contractor paying near the median is competing with commercial and data center contractors for the same journeymen. On Classet's platform, 55% of applicants apply outside business hours, so the contractor who reaches them that evening gets the first conversation.

## Who is hiring trades in Dallas-Fort Worth

Data center construction south of Dallas pulls electricians and mechanical crews off commercial and residential work. In April 2026 DataBank closed a $2 billion construction loan for the first 3 buildings of its Red Oak campus, about 24 miles south of downtown Dallas, totaling 600,000 square feet and 180 MW, with 8 buildings planned for the site. DataBank says the financing speeds construction and delivery of the campus by about 18 months, and every building needs electricians, pipefitters and HVAC mechanics. For more on that market, see the [Dallas-Fort Worth data center hiring page](/use-cases/data-centers/dallas-fort-worth).

The residential side hires all year. Berkeys Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical, headquartered in Southlake with locations in Frisco, Dallas and Fort Worth, recruits plumbing technicians, HVAC technicians and installers, and licensed electricians, and has served the Metroplex for more than 40 years. A residential company in Plano or Arlington competes with Berkeys for service techs and with the Red Oak contractors for anyone holding a journeyman license.

## Where DFW tradespeople train

IBEW Local 20 is the union local for electricians across the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, based in Grand Prairie since its 1998 charter, and it runs the area's union electrical apprenticeship. On the mechanical side, UA Local 100 in Dallas runs a 5-year registered apprenticeship for plumbers, pipefitters and welders, and HVACR service technicians. Apprentices work days for union contractors and attend class two nights a week from August through May, starting at 50% of a mechanic's wage.

Non-union contractors also hire from Dallas College, whose Tradesman Plumber certificate replaces the 4,000 hours of on-the-job training the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners otherwise requires for a Tradesman license. For a recruiter, those paths show up on an application as an apprenticeship year, a Texas tradesman or journeyman license, or a list of jobs with no formal program at all. Joy asks for each in the same interview: which program the applicant attended, the apprenticeship year completed, the license number and expiration date, and how many years of field work they have. The answers sit in the summary for your office to check.

## What Joy does on a DFW trades application

Joy is a phone and web-call interviewer that starts the conversation the moment a tradesperson applies on Indeed, your careers page or a Classet interview link. For a Dallas-Fort Worth electrician, Joy asks for Texas license class, data center, commercial or residential experience, OSHA 10 or 30, own tools and whether the applicant can reach a job site in Red Oak, Frisco or Fort Worth. An HVAC applicant hears questions about EPA 608 type, service versus install, brands worked on and summer on-call availability.

Joy answers questions about pay, the truck and the schedule from the FAQ you wrote, runs in 25+ languages including Spanish, and routes anyone who opts out to your team. Knockout results sit at the top of the DFW summary, with the answers, transcript and recording below them. A service manager or superintendent decides who comes in; each must-have comes back Met or Not met, and Fast-track, if you turn it on, flags the strongest fits for a first call; nobody is moved or turned away by software, and your recruiter can disagree with any result. Candidates who clear your must-haves can get a text with your open times and book on their phone through [Scheduling](/scheduling), available by request. [Call to Apply](/call-to-apply) adds a hiring number on the truck or sign that Joy answers 24/7. The hub page on [skilled trades recruiting software](/use-cases/skilled-trades) covers the full interview, question by question.

## Trades Joy screens in Dallas-Fort Worth

A Dallas electrical opening and an HVAC opening run as two interviews in Hiring Hub or your ATS, each with knockouts and an FAQ for that trade. Electricians, the largest licensed trade in the metro at 20,930 jobs and a $59,010 median, answer for Texas license class, apprenticeship history, data center or commercial experience, OSHA 10 or 30 and their own tools. HVAC technicians cover EPA 608 type, Texas air conditioning license status, brands worked on and on-call availability for July and August.

Plumbers and pipefitters are asked about license level, gas line and water heater work, new construction versus service and weekend availability. Carpenters and construction laborers, 29,670 laborers at a $43,960 median, answer for framing or finish experience, reliable transportation, overtime availability and which DFW counties they can reach by 7am. A homebuilder's framing crew and a data center contractor's laborer pool use the same interview with different knockouts.

## Frequently asked questions

### How fast can we hire electricians in Dallas-Fort Worth?

The interview can happen the day the electrician applies, and that is the step most contractors lose time on. Joy phones or web-calls applicants the moment they apply, including evenings and weekends, and asks for Texas license class, apprenticeship history, data center or residential experience, own tools and which part of the Metroplex the applicant can reach. On Classet's platform, 88% of candidates who start the phone screen finish within 20 minutes of applying, so the summary and recording reach Hiring Hub or your ATS the same evening.

Dallas-Fort Worth has 20,930 electricians at a $59,010 median wage, and data center campuses such as DataBank's 180 MW first phase in Red Oak are hiring from that pool. Your remaining steps, the in-person interview, any background check and the offer, set the rest of the timeline. A person on your team makes each decision.

### Are DFW data center projects pulling electricians away from residential contractors?

Data center construction adds a large, well-funded buyer for the same licensed electricians, HVAC mechanics and pipefitters a residential contractor needs. DataBank's Red Oak campus alone has 8 buildings planned, with a $2 billion loan closed in April 2026 for the first 3 buildings and 180 MW of power. A residential service company in Plano or Fort Worth cannot outbid that on every hire, but it can be the first to call.

With Joy, the applicant hears from you the moment they apply, answers the license, experience and schedule questions, and your service manager has the summary that night. Contractors staffing data center jobs use the same interview with knockouts for commercial experience, OSHA 30 and travel to Ellis County. Classet's [Dallas-Fort Worth data center page](/use-cases/data-centers/dallas-fort-worth) covers that side of the market.

### Does Joy verify Texas trade licenses?

No. Joy asks for the license and records it; your office verifies it. During the interview Joy collects the license type, number and expiration date, for example a Texas journeyman electrician license, a tradesman plumber license or EPA 608 Universal, and the answer appears word for word in the transcript and in the summary field for that question. Checking that number with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the State Board of Plumbing Examiners or the EPA is your office's job; Joy does not look it up.

You choose which credentials are must-haves, and the summary shows whether each applicant meets or does not meet each one. A DFW HVAC company might set EPA 608 Universal, a valid driver's license and 2 years of residential service as knockouts. On Classet's platform, 55% of applicants apply outside business hours, so the license details are usually waiting when your office opens.

### Can Joy interview Spanish-speaking tradespeople in Dallas?

Yes. Each DFW job can offer Spanish or any of the 25+ languages Joy speaks, and you turn languages on per requisition. A framing crew lead in Garland or an HVAC installer in Irving can answer in Spanish, and your team reads the transcript and summary alongside the recording. The questions are the same in each language: license and certification, years in the trade, tools, transportation and start date.

A Dallas or Fort Worth applicant who asks for a person can opt out of the AI call and goes straight to your team. Classet runs a monthly third-party bias audit through Warden AI, and Joy records answers without grading how anyone speaks; a person on your team makes the hiring decision. Across 10,167 post-interview ratings on a 4-point scale, 88% of candidates rated the interview positively.

### Does Joy work with our ATS?

Yes. ATS Sync is the Classet integration connecting Joy to 95 applicant tracking systems, including Greenhouse, Workday, Bullhorn, iCIMS, Paycor and UKG. A DFW applicant entering your ATS kicks off the call, and Joy writes the knockouts, summary, transcript and recording back onto that candidate's profile. DFW contractors without an ATS use Hiring Hub, Classet's built-in applicant tracking, which includes a direct Indeed connection, applicant import and a Kanban pipeline, and can start the same day.

ATS-integrated deployments start at $1,995 a month and are scoped in a discovery call based on volume and the systems involved. A residential service company posting on Indeed fits Hiring Hub, and a commercial electrical contractor already on Workday or UKG fits ATS Sync.

### What does AI phone screening cost for a Dallas-Fort Worth contractor?

Standalone pricing is $249 a month billed annually, or $349 month-to-month, with 50 completed interviews included; you bring applicants through Indeed, your careers page or an interview link. Scale is $999 a month billed annually, or $1,399 month-to-month, with 250 completed interviews. ATS-integrated deployments start at $1,995 a month and are scoped in a discovery call.

If an applicant ignores the call, it costs nothing, since billing counts completed interviews. A residential HVAC or plumbing company in Frisco hiring a few technicians before summer fits inside Starter. An electrical contractor staffing a data center job and interviewing more than 50 applicants a month needs Scale or an ATS-integrated plan.
