The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro employed 31,310 assemblers and fabricators in May 2025 at a median of $38,340 a year, about $18.43 an hour, according to BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics. First-line production supervisors numbered 16,880 at a median of $69,940, and industrial machinery mechanics 12,730 at $63,380. The skilled trades are thinner. DFW counted 10,620 welders, cutters and solderers at a median of $51,630 and only 4,660 machinists at $59,830, about $28.76 an hour against a national machinist median of $28.24. Compared with Houston, the Metroplex has roughly half as many machinists for a larger assembly workforce, so a DFW plant hiring a CNC operator recruits from a short list while the assembler posting next to it draws hundreds of applications. Both problems end up on the same plant recruiter's desk, with Houston's 8,140 machinists as the nearest comparison. ## Which DFW manufacturers are hiring production workers? Lockheed Martin's Fort Worth plant employs 19,000 people, and the company said in a January 2026 release that it delivered a record 191 F-35 fighter jets in 2025. General Motors' Arlington Assembly plant, open since 1954, builds the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon and the Cadillac Escalade, and employed more than 5,400 people in 2024, according to the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce. Texas Instruments makes chips in Richardson, where the first RFAB opened in 2009 as the world's first 300mm analog fab, according to TI, and the company said a second Richardson fab would add several hundred jobs. Those three employers hire assemblers, machinists, maintenance technicians and fab technicians from the same applicant pool as the Metroplex's contract manufacturers and machine shops. Dallas College is the public community college system teaching CNC machining in Dallas County, with 8 certificates and an Associate of Applied Science in Precision Machining Technology at its Eastfield campus in Mesquite and its Richland campus in North Dallas. The CNC Mill and Lathe Operator Certificate takes 8 months and costs $1,782, and the Precision Machining Technology AAS takes 2 years and costs $5,940.
