Industry panels described "a thin pool of electricians, specialized MEP trades and commissioning staff" in Phoenix in March 2026, according to Hoodline. TSMC raised its Arizona commitment to $265 billion in July 2026, enough for 10 fabs, two advanced packaging plants, and a research center on its Phoenix-area campus, per Engineering News-Record. The data center side is not slowing down either. CBRE counted more than 260 MW of colocation absorption in Phoenix in the first half of 2026, and JLL's midyear 2025 report put Phoenix vacancy at 3%. Arizona also lacks a statewide journeyman license, so a resume that says "electrician" tells your superintendent very little. In Arizona, the IBEW describes itself as the only organization that certifies Journeyman Wireman skills, which leaves the non-union applicant pool with no card to check. ## Phoenix electrician wages and employment The Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro employed 17,240 electricians in May 2025 at a median annual wage of $61,210, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, slightly below the national electrician median of $63,190. The metro also employed 8,070 HVAC mechanics and installers at a median of $61,170. The metro electrician median works out to about $29.40 an hour. That hourly figure is what a Phoenix superintendent is bidding against. A commercial electrician near the metro median weighs a data center offer on rate, hours, and phase length, and the fab contractors working for TSMC are offering the same journeymen multi-year work. A posting that states the rate, the hours by phase, and the summer schedule up front gets the callback. ## Who is building data centers in metro Phoenix The Phoenix campuses pulling the most trades in late 2026 sit in the West Valley and Mesa. Prime Data Centers broke ground in Avondale on PHX01, a $3 billion-plus, 240 MW campus of 1.3 million square feet on 66.5 acres, with ARCOMurray as general contractor and three buildings under construction, according to MetroPhoenix. Stream Data Centers' PHXA campus in Goodyear covers 157 acres with 280 MW of critical load, seven buildings, and a 480 MW APS substation, and two of the seven buildings are complete, per Stream. In Mesa, EdgeCore's $1.9 billion, 3.1 million-square-foot campus is planned for at least 450 MW with Holder Construction as general contractor, and Meta's $1 billion, five-building campus has DPR Construction as general contractor, according to Construction Dive. Both Mesa campuses recruit from the 17,240 metro electricians the BLS counted in May 2025. ## Where Phoenix data center trades train IBEW Local 640, chartered in 1925, trains inside wiremen through the Phoenix Electrical JATC, which runs two Phoenix campuses and is taking applications until March 15, 2027 for its fall 2027 class. On the non-union side, the Arizona Builders Alliance graduated 35 electrical apprentices on May 29, 2026 from its four-year, 8,000-hour program, according to EC&M. For operations and construction roles, Mesa Community College launched a 22-credit Data Center Operations certificate, with scholarship money from QTS ($33,000), AFCOM ($10,000), and EdgeCore ($5,000) and support from DPR Construction, Mortenson, and Sundt, according to GovTech in October 2025. Arizona's Registrar of Contractors licenses the contracting firm, and the City of Phoenix's journeyman program covers plumbing, mechanical, and gas fitting but not electrical work.
