Loudoun issued building permits for more than 10 million square feet of data center space in 2025, the highest one-year total in the county's history, and counted about 56.5 million square feet built or under construction as of March 1, 2026. The county's own numbers show the scale. Loudoun counted about 233 data center buildings built or under construction as of March 1, 2026, and every one of them needed electricians, pipefitters, and controls technicians during the build and facilities staff afterward. CBRE put Northern Virginia vacancy at 0.24% in the first half of 2026, so operators keep starting new halls. ## Northern Virginia electrician wages and employment The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro, which includes Loudoun and Prince William counties, employed 16,580 electricians in May 2025 at a median annual wage of $75,930, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, well above the national electrician median of $63,190. The metro also employed 8,730 HVAC mechanics and installers at a median of $71,920. The metro electrician median works out to about $36.50 an hour, well above the Atlanta median of $58,650 a year or the Phoenix median of $61,210. That wage level explains why Northern Virginia journeymen move between contractors so often: with dozens of campuses hiring at once, an electrician near the $75,930 median can change jobs for a better rate, a shorter commute, or guaranteed overtime. Virginia licenses individual journeymen and masters through the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, so your first conversation can capture a license number for your team to check alongside the work history. ## Who is building data centers in Loudoun and Prince William The Northern Virginia data center work pulling the most electricians in late 2026 runs through Ashburn and Sterling in Loudoun County and south into Prince William County. Loudoun County collected $1.2 billion in data center property tax in fiscal 2026, 39% of the county budget, and counts more than 17,000 direct and indirect data center jobs, according to the county. Power Solutions, one of the electrical contractors staffing these jobs, grew from 600 to more than 1,600 electricians, and one of its general foremen ran a crew of more than 250 electricians with 60 to 70 apprentices on a single Loudoun data center, according to a Data Center Frontier profile from November 2024. ## Where Northern Virginia data center trades train IBEW Local 26 trains inside wiremen through its Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, and its signatory contractors train apprentices on the job, such as the 60 to 70 apprentices on one Power Solutions crew in Loudoun. On the licensing side, Virginia's Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation issues journeyman and master electrician licenses. A journeyman applicant qualifies with four years of practical experience plus 240 hours of formal training, five years plus 160 hours, six years plus 80 hours, or seven or more years plus 40 hours, according to the DPOR application revised July 1, 2026. A completed registered apprenticeship is another path. For operations roles, Northern Virginia Community College runs data center operations courses at its Loudoun and Manassas campuses, backed by a $300,000 contribution from Amazon Web Services in 2023. Microsoft's Datacenter Academy runs four-month programs with the Loudoun Freedom Center for datacenter technician and critical-environment technician roles.
