At least 142 data centers were under construction in Texas in April 2026, one more than Virginia, according to The Texas Tribune, citing the data firm Aterio. Texas had about 71,000 electricians, and data center projects were paying around $35 an hour against roughly $20 at small homebuilders, per a Texas Tribune report republished by Governing. One builder said houses were taking two months longer to finish. The regional forecast is no better. The Texas Workforce Commission projects Dallas, Tarrant, and North Central Texas will need nearly 3,000 additional electricians by 2032, with more than 1,000 electrician openings a year in the Dallas region alone, according to The Dallas Morning News as cited by CEC Facilities Group. On the colocation side, CBRE counted 765 MW under construction in DFW in the first half of 2026, about 95% of it preleased. ## DFW electrician wages and employment The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro employed 20,930 electricians in May 2025 at a median annual wage of $59,010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, below the national electrician median of $63,190. The metro also employed 10,910 HVAC mechanics and installers at a median of $59,560. The metro electrician median works out to about $28.40 an hour. That median is the reason DFW journeymen compare full pay stacks instead of base rates. The Texas Tribune reported data center jobs paying around $35 an hour in April 2026 against about $20 at small homebuilders, so a residential electrician near the metro median has a reason to move, before overtime and per diem. Texas licenses individual electricians through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, so your first conversation can capture a license class and number for your team to verify, which most other data center states cannot offer. ## Who is building data centers in DFW The DFW campuses pulling the most electricians in late 2026 sit in Ellis County, Dallas, and the northern suburbs. DataBank's Red Oak campus covers 292 acres planned for eight buildings and 480 MW, fed by a 400 MW Oncor substation, per the company. CEC Facilities Group, an Irving electrical contractor, is growing from about 2,200 employees toward nearly 4,000 within 18 months, and one West Texas campus alone needs about 1.9 million electrical labor hours over 14 to 16 months, according to The Dallas Morning News. Outside the metro, the Stargate campus in Abilene created 9,000 construction jobs, and Texas Instruments started production at its Sherman fab on December 17, 2025. Both recruit the DFW journeyman who applied to your posting last night. ## Where DFW data center trades train IBEW Local 20 has served the Metroplex since 1998 and trains apprentices at the IBEW-NECA Training Center at 680 West Tarrant Road in Grand Prairie, with college credit through Dallas College North Lake. Local 20 apprentices start at $20.33 an hour plus $2.91 an hour toward benefits, per the local. On the non-union side, IEC Dallas and IEC Fort Worth run paid apprenticeships that prepare apprentices for the TDLR journeyman exam. Large contractors are building their own pipelines too. CEC Facilities Group's CEC University recruits 30 to 40 apprentices a year through regional career and technical education partnerships, according to the company. Texas requires 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under a Texas master electrician before TDLR issues a journeyman license, and applicants can sit for the exam at 7,000 hours.
