# Why Your HVAC Job Isn't Getting Applicants on Indeed

Your HVAC job post on Indeed is quiet, and the instinct is to sponsor it harder. Fix the post and your response time first. Includes an HVAC technician job description template.

Guides & Insights, Skilled Trades

It's the first cold week of the year, your phones are ringing, and your "HVAC Technician" post on Indeed has pulled four applicants in two weeks. Two of them don't have an EPA 608. The obvious move is to sponsor the post or raise the budget. For most shops that's the wrong first move, because a bigger budget pushes a weak post in front of more people who skip it.

Quick answer

HVAC job posts stop getting applicants on Indeed for three reasons. Free posts sink in search as newer jobs are added. The post leaves out what technicians filter on: pay, the truck, on-call, and which certifications you require. Then the few applicants who do come in hear back a day or two late. Fix the post and your response time before you add budget. Then sponsor in short, capped tests and judge them by the number of applicants you spoke with.

## Why is my HVAC job not getting applicants on Indeed?

Most quiet HVAC posts are free posts that have slipped below newer listings. Indeed still lets you post up to three jobs a month for free, and each free post stays live for up to 30 days. Indeed's own [employer pricing guide](https://www.indeed.com/hire/resources/howtohub/how-pricing-works-on-indeed) also says free posts "fall back in search as new jobs are added." In a metro where every shop is hiring techs before winter, that happens fast.

Recruiters are reporting the same pattern in 2026. In September a talent acquisition lead whose company posts through UKG said on LinkedIn that some of their jobs showed as active in the Indeed dashboard but couldn't be found in search, even by exact company name and title. Their Indeed rep told them the algorithm had changed and was ranking non-sponsored jobs lower. Neither of us can see inside Indeed's ranking, so put your effort into the two things you control: how good the post is when someone sees it, and how fast you call the people who apply.

## How do you get more applicants without spending more?

Fix the post first, then your response time, and add sponsorship last. Most owners work this list backwards. They raise the budget first, try a new title second, and never look at response time. This order wastes the least money:

1. **Fix the post.** Pay, title, truck, schedule, and real requirements (details below). This costs nothing, and every dollar of sponsorship you spend later works harder because of it.
2. **Fix your response time.** If an applicant waits two days for a call, you paid for an application you're about to lose. Classet's data shows hires drop 50 to 70% for each day an employer waits to respond.
3. **Sponsor in short, capped tests.** Run 7 to 10 days with a daily cap you'd be fine losing. Indeed's budget is an average and not a hard cap, so check the weekly ceiling in our [Indeed job posting cost breakdown](/blog/indeed-job-posting-cost).
4. **Judge the test by cost per applicant you spoke with.** Skip cost per applicant. If sponsorship doubles applicants but you still only reach three of them, it bought you nothing.

## What do HVAC technicians look for in a job post?

HVAC technicians look for pay first, then the truck, the on-call schedule, and which certifications you require. They scan a post the way you scan a bid. They look for the number first, then the deal-breakers. Our guide on [how to write a job posting candidates believe](/blog/how-to-write-a-job-posting) covers the general research. These are the HVAC-specific items that move applications.

### 1\. Pay, as an hourly range

Indeed reported in July 2025 that [jobs with employer-provided salaries receive 3.8 times more applications](https://www.indeed.com/news/releases/pay-transparency-across-high-earning-sectors). Put the range in the post, and put the top of it in the first line. For reference, BLS data for May 2025 puts the national median for HVAC mechanics and installers at $61,010 a year (about $29.33 an hour). The 10th percentile is $40,050 and the 90th is $95,210. If you're under the median, say what makes up the difference: spiffs, overtime you can count on, or a guaranteed 40.

### 2\. A title techs search for

Techs search "HVAC service technician," "HVAC installer," and "HVAC tech," and nobody searches "Comfort Specialist II." Keep the title plain and add one qualifier: "HVAC Service Technician (EPA 608, $28–$38/hr)." A 2025 field experiment on a large blue-collar job platform found that stuffing too many specifics into a title reduced clicks. So put the pay and one requirement in the title and leave everything else for the body.

### 3\. The truck and the tools

Say whether there's a take-home truck, who supplies the tools, and whether there's a tool allowance. For a lot of techs this decides it before pay does, and it costs you one line.

### 4\. On-call and hours, stated plainly

"Rotating on-call, one week in four, paid at $X per call" gets applications. "Must be flexible" gets skipped by the techs you want and attracts the ones who'll quit in March.

### 5\. Requirements split into must-have and nice-to-have

Only list a requirement as a must-have if you'd turn down someone without it. EPA Section 608 certification is a federal requirement for technicians who [service equipment containing refrigerants](https://www.epa.gov/section608/section-608-technician-certification-requirements), so it belongs there. NATE, a specific brand, or five years of experience belong under nice-to-have. A long must-have list scares off the second-year tech who'd have been great in six months.

### 6\. A short apply

Keep Indeed Apply on and limit screening questions to the two or three that are real knockouts: EPA 608, a valid driver's license, and the ability to work your service area. Ask everything else on the phone.

## HVAC technician job description template

An HVAC technician job description should fit on one phone screen and lead with pay. Copy this and fill in the brackets. It's written to be scanned on a phone.

HVAC Service Technician — $\[28\]–$\[38\]/hr + \[take-home truck\]

\[Company\] services \[residential / light commercial\] systems across \[service area\].
We've been doing it since \[year\] and run \[number\] trucks.

What you'll do
- Diagnose and repair heating and cooling systems on service calls
- Run preventive maintenance agreements for our \[number\] members
- Explain repair options to homeowners and write up the work order

Pay and schedule
- $\[28\]–$\[38\]/hr based on experience, paid weekly
- \[Mon–Fri, 7–4\] with rotating on-call \[1 week in 4\], paid $\[X\] per call

- \[1+\] year of HVAC service experience

Nice to have

That last line tells a working tech when to expect your call, so only write a promise you'll keep.

## "No applicants" is often "no conversations"

Plenty of shops that say they get no applicants get a steady trickle and lose most of it before anyone calls. Classet's data shows 64% of candidates apply after hours, so a tech finishing their last call at 7pm applies from the truck. If your service manager returns calls between jobs the next afternoon, that tech has already heard from two other shops. Our [HVAC phone screening guide](/blog/ai-phone-screening-hvac) goes deeper on the who-calls-first problem.

We built [Classet Hiring Hub](/hiring-hub) for that gap. It's an applicant tracking system for owners and service managers who hire off Indeed and don't have a recruiter. You connect your own Indeed account, post organic or sponsored jobs, and applicants land on a board for each job. Joy, Classet's AI interviewer, calls applicants within minutes of applying, day or night, and asks your knockout questions: EPA 608, license, service area, availability. You get a summary and a two-minute recording on each card, and you decide who to call back. Applicants who miss the call get text and email follow-ups.

Pricing starts at $249 a month billed annually ($349 month-to-month) with 50 completed interviews included, and your first 20 interviews are free. If your hiring still runs on a spreadsheet, our guide to [hiring without an ATS](/blog/hiring-without-an-ats) shows where that setup leaks candidates.

## Common questions

Why is my Indeed job not getting any applicants?

The usual causes are a free post that has sunk below newer listings, a post that leaves out pay or the deal-breakers candidates filter on, and a title nobody searches for. Check the post in Indeed's dashboard with "View public job page," add an hourly pay range and a plain title, and then decide whether a short sponsored test is worth it.

Can you still post a job on Indeed for free?

Yes. As of September 2026, Indeed allows up to three free job posts per calendar month, each live for up to 30 days. Free posts fall back in search as newer jobs are added, so in a competitive metro they get fewer views after the first few days.

Should I sponsor my HVAC job on Indeed?

Sponsor after you've fixed the post and your response time. Then run a capped test for 7 to 10 days and measure the cost per applicant you spoke with. If that number doesn't improve over the free post, the problem isn't visibility.

How much should I pay HVAC technicians?

BLS data for May 2025 puts the national median for HVAC mechanics and installers at $61,010 a year, about $29.33 an hour. Pay ranges from $40,050 at the 10th percentile to $95,210 at the 90th, and local rates vary a lot. Post a range that covers where you'd hire, and put the top of it in the title.

What should an HVAC technician job description include?

An hourly pay range, a plain title, the truck and tools arrangement, hours and on-call terms, and requirements split into must-have and nice-to-have, with EPA 608 as a must-have for service roles. Keep it short enough to read on a phone and say when applicants will hear from you.

## Key points

- Free Indeed posts fall back in search as newer jobs are added, so a quiet post in October is normal and fixable.
- Fix the post and your response time before you spend more on sponsorship.
- Indeed reports that posts with employer-provided pay get 3.8 times more applications. Put an hourly range in the HVAC title.
- List EPA 608 as a must-have and move the rest to nice-to-have.
- Judge sponsorship by the cost per applicant you spoke with.
