# How to Hire Data Center Electricians When Every Contractor Is Bidding for the Same Crews

What a data center electrician needs to know (medium voltage, UPS, generator switchgear), where they come from, why the first real conversation wins, and a five-step hiring process that ends in a phone screen within minutes.

Texas has at least 142 data centers under construction, more than any other state, according to the [Texas Tribune](https://www.texastribune.org/2026/04/08/texas-data-centers-sales-tax-break-billion-dollars/). Every one of them is an electrical project first. The IBEW puts electrical work at [45 to 70 percent](https://ibew.org/electrical_worker/the-data-center-surge-a-new-generation-of-ibew-jobs/) of a data center's construction budget, and the general contractors and MEP subs who hold those awards are all recruiting from the same pool of journeymen, at the same time, with the same job boards.

So this is not a post about sourcing tricks. It is about what a data center electrician needs to know, where the ones who know it come from, and why the contractor who gets to a real conversation first usually gets the hire. It ends with the five-step process our data center customers run, which finishes with a phone screen minutes after the application, not a callback the following week.

Quick answer

A data center electrician is a licensed journeyman with four skills that commercial work does not always build: medium-voltage distribution at 15 to 35 kV, UPS and battery systems, generator paralleling switchgear, and commissioning experience. The IBEW puts electrical work at 45 to 70 percent of a data center's construction budget, which is why every general contractor and MEP subcontractor in a market recruits the same journeymen at the same time. Candidates arrive from commercial and industrial contractors, IBEW referral books, other data center sites as phases end, and travelers on per diem. Because each of them fields competing calls weekly, the process that wins reaches an applicant the day the application lands and puts a summary in front of the superintendent before the next bidder calls.

## What a data center electrician needs to know

A journeyman license is the floor, not the qualification. Residential and light commercial work is 120 to 480 volts, single or three phase, panels and branch circuits. A hyperscale campus takes utility power at medium voltage, steps it down through its own substation and switchgear, runs it through UPS systems and generator plants, and distributes it to the halls through busway and PDUs. The electricians who can do that work have four things on their resume that the others do not.

**Medium-voltage distribution.** Site feeds and campus loops typically run at 15 to 35 kV. Wilson Electric, an Arizona contractor active on QTS and Stream data centers, describes a confidential Maricopa County job with 35 kV medium-voltage feeding 18-megawatt halls on its [data center page](https://www.wilsonelectric.net/markets/data-center/). Terminating, splicing, and testing at that voltage is a separate skill set and a separate safety regime.

**UPS and battery systems.** Every hall sits behind uninterruptible power supplies with battery strings or flywheels. Installing, commissioning, and testing them under load is the heart of the electrical scope.

**Generator paralleling switchgear.** Multi-megawatt generator plants that start, sync, and pick up load in seconds when utility power drops. Electricians who have pulled and terminated the control wiring for paralleling gear are scarce.

**Commissioning.** Level 1 through Level 5 commissioning walks a hall from factory tests to integrated systems testing under simulated failures. Electricians who have worked a commissioning schedule know how to work alongside test engineers and document everything.

Add NFPA 70E arc-flash training, OSHA 30, and comfort on a badge-access site with a live customer next door, and you have the profile. Most applicants will have two of the four. Your screen has to find out which two, quickly, because the electrician with all four is on a competitor's site and takes calls at lunch.

## Where they come from

**Commercial and industrial contractors.** The largest pool. Journeymen who have wired hospitals, plants, and high-rises have the license and the three-phase experience, and many have touched medium voltage or generators. They lack the data center specifics, which a good contractor trains in the first month. The Texas Tribune [reports](https://www.governing.com/workforce/data-centers-strain-electrician-workforce-in-texas) data center projects paying around $35 an hour against $20 at small homebuilders, which tells you which direction the flow runs.

**IBEW halls.** In the markets with the most construction, the union pool has grown fast. IBEW Local 26, covering Northern Virginia, has roughly doubled since 2018 to about 14,700 members and does close to 97 percent of the region's data center electrical work, per the IBEW's own [account](https://ibew.org/electrical_worker/the-data-center-surge-a-new-generation-of-ibew-jobs/). Signatory contractors staff through the hall's referral book and bring in travelers from other locals when the book runs dry.

**Other data center sites.** The electricians Mike Rowe met in Plano had each been [poached three times in 18 months](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/article/dirty-jobs-host-mike-rowe-gen-z-electricians-are-making-up-to-280000-at-ai-data-centers-130758268.html). Experienced data center electricians move between campuses as phases end, and they move to whoever calls first with the next ramp.

**Travelers.** Journeymen from slower markets working on per diem. Texas has been widening the door: the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation added electrician reciprocity with [Alabama](https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/news/2026/03/20/texas-expands-electrician-reciprocity-with-alabama-to-support-skilled-workforce-and-economic-growth/) in March 2026 and Iowa in February, on top of nine other states. Travelers are how contractors like CEC Facilities Group in Irving grow from about 2,200 employees toward 4,000 in 18 months, as the Dallas Morning News reported and CEC [recounts](https://cecfg.com/2026/06/09/cecuniversitypower/).

**Apprentices and new entrants.** The long game. Meta's America's Workforce Academy, Google's funding of the electrical training ALLIANCE, and contractor programs like CEC University are adding first-year apprentices, but Fortune's [reporting](https://fortune.com/2026/03/02/ai-data-centers-electrician-shortage-gen-z-training-careers/) puts the national need at more than 300,000 new electricians over the decade while about 20,000 retire each year. Apprentices fill your crew in 2029. The journeyman you need for the rough-in phase that starts in November is already employed.

## Why the first real conversation wins

Every source above describes the same market: the electricians who can do this work are employed, they get competing calls weekly, and they move when a real offer arrives. In that market, the hiring process is not a filter. It is a race to a conversation.

Consider what a journeyman does when he applies from his truck at 6:15pm. He applied to your posting and two others. The contractor whose recruiter calls Thursday morning is talking to someone who already accepted a start date. The contractor whose process reaches him that evening, asks seven questions about license, voltage class, UPS and switchgear, travel, per diem, and start date, and has a superintendent call back the next morning with numbers, gets the electrician.

## The five-step process

1.  **Write the posting for the electrician, not the compliance office.** Rate, expected hours by phase, per diem or housing, differential, ramp end date, and the four skills above listed as required versus preferred. 2.  **Open reqs a phase ahead.** MEP rough-in headcount peaks months after civil work starts. Post when the slab is poured, not when the conduit arrives, and keep a bench of screened candidates warm between phases.

## Common questions

What qualifications does a data center electrician need?

A journeyman electrician license is the floor, and in Virginia and Texas that license is issued by the state (DPOR and TDLR respectively), while Arizona, Ohio, and Georgia license the contracting firm rather than the individual. On top of the license, four data-center-specific skills separate candidates: medium-voltage distribution at 15 to 35 kV, UPS and battery system installation and testing, generator paralleling switchgear including the control wiring, and commissioning experience through integrated systems testing. NFPA 70E arc-flash training and OSHA 30 are expected before anyone works near live gear, and many contractors pay for both in the first 90 days. Most applicants hold two of the four skills rather than all four, so the screen exists to find out which two and how recent they are.

Where do contractors find data center electricians?

Four pools, in order of size. Commercial and industrial contractors supply the most candidates: journeymen who have wired hospitals, plants, and high-rises hold the license and the three-phase experience and can be trained on the data center specifics in about a month. IBEW referral books supply the next tranche, and in the biggest markets those books have grown fast, with Local 26 in Northern Virginia roughly doubling since 2018 to about 14,700 members while still failing to fill calls. Other data center sites supply experienced hands as phases end. Travelers on per diem supply the rest, moving under state reciprocity agreements that Texas expanded in 2026 to include Alabama and Iowa. Apprenticeship programs funded by Meta, Google, and contractors add new entrants, but a four-to-five-year apprenticeship means those workers arrive in 2029 or later.

How fast do data center electricians accept other offers?

Within days, and often within one week of applying. Mike Rowe described meeting three electricians at a Plano, Texas data center, all under 30, each of whom had been poached three times in the prior 18 months. Journeymen with medium-voltage and switchgear experience field competing calls weekly because every campus in the market is bidding for the same people.
