Useful for them. Useless for you, because you are not trying to help someone pass. You are trying to find out, in the ten minutes before the hiring manager's calendar fills up, whether the person on the phone has walked a data hall at 3am and knows what to do when the UPS goes to battery.

## Why the phone screen decides the hire

## Safety (questions 1 to 4)

Safety comes first because a wrong answer here ends the conversation. Data center technicians work near live medium-voltage gear, batteries, generators, and rotating equipment. 1.  **Have you worked around live electrical equipment? What procedures did you follow before touching anything?** Listen for lockout/tagout, a permit or ticket to work, verifying zero energy, arc-flash PPE. A candidate who says "we were always careful" has not done it under a real program.
2.  **What PPE did you wear on the electrical side, and when?** Arc-rated clothing, face shield, insulated gloves, and a sense of when the boundary changes. Specifics matter more than completeness.
3.  **Tell me about a time you stopped work because something was unsafe.** Anyone who has worked a real site has one. The story should include who they told.
4.  **Which safety certifications do you hold, and are they current?** OSHA 10 or 30, NFPA 70E training, first aid or CPR. Honesty about expired cards is a good sign, not a bad one.

## Electrical and mechanical basics (questions 5 to 8)

You are not testing engineering knowledge. You are checking that the candidate understands the chain that keeps the racks powered and cool, because that is what every alarm is about.

5.  **Walk me from the utility feed to the server. What sits in between?** Switchgear, transformers, UPS, PDUs, rack PDUs or busway. Order matters less than knowing the pieces exist and what each one protects against.
6.  **What does the UPS do when utility power drops, and what happens next?** Batteries carry the load until the generators start and the transfer switch moves the load. A tech who has watched it happen describes the sequence with times.
7.  **How does the cooling side work at the sites you have been in?** CRAC or CRAH units, hot and cold aisle containment, chilled water or DX. Bonus if they mention what temperature readings they watched.
8.  **What is the difference between a hardware technician's job and a critical facilities technician's job, and which have you done?** Hardware techs live on racks, drives, and cabling; critical facilities techs live on switchgear, UPS, generators, and chillers. This tells you which role the candidate is applying for.

## Troubleshooting (questions 9 to 12)

The middle of a shift is tickets, and the value of a technician is how they work one from alarm to closed.

9.  **Tell me about the last hardware failure you fixed, from alarm to closed ticket.** Listen for the verification step. Watching the RAID rebuild, confirming the link light, closing the ticket with a note. Techs who skip verification cause the second outage.
10.  **An alarm fires that you have not seen before. What do you do in the first five minutes?** Check the DCIM or BMS for what tripped, walk to the gear, decide fix-or-escalate, and tell someone. The good answer includes a person they would call.
11.  **Have you run, terminated, or tested fiber? What tester did you use?** A yes with a tester name is strong. A no is a training item for hardware roles, not a disqualifier.
12.  **What ticketing or monitoring tools have you worked in?** ServiceNow, Jira, a DCIM platform, a BMS. Any real system counts. "Spreadsheets and a radio" is fine at a small site if the other answers are solid.

## Shift reliability and fit (questions 13 to 15)

This is the section most interview guides skip and the one that predicts whether the hire is still there in six months. Data centers run 24/7. If the schedule and the commute do not fit, nothing else matters.

13.  **Our shifts are 12 hours, 4 on and 4 off, alternating days and nights every four weeks. Have you worked a schedule like that, and how did it go for you?** Listen for a realistic answer about sleep, family, and the swap weeks. Enthusiasm without experience is a yellow flag; experience with a plan is green.
14.  **How far is the campus from where you live, and how would you get here for a 6am start in January?** A real plan. Data center campuses sit outside town, and the 45-minute pre-dawn commute is the top reason new techs quit in month two.
15.  **What would make you leave a data center job within the first year?** Techs who have been poached before know the answer: schedule, pay compression, no path to critical facilities. Their answer tells you what to fix in your offer.
