# ATS AI Agents Are Shipping. Which Ones Actually Screen Frontline Applicants?

iCIMS, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, and UKG all shipped AI agents for recruiting in 2026. Here's what each one automates, which ones talk to candidates, and what to ask before you count on them for frontline screening.

AI Recruiting, Guides & Insights

If you run talent acquisition on Workday, iCIMS, SAP SuccessFactors, or UKG, your vendor is about to tell you it has agents. Most of them do now. iCIMS announced three in September, Workday's Rising conference next week is built around agentic HR, and SAP has folded SmartRecruiters into SuccessFactors. For a frontline hiring team, the question to ask is whether any of those agents has the first conversation with a warehouse, retail, or field-service applicant, because that conversation is what eats your recruiters' week.

Quick answer

ATS AI agents are AI features inside applicant tracking systems that do recruiting tasks on their own: sourcing, interview scheduling, hiring-manager approvals, and in some cases text or chat screening. As of October 2026, iCIMS, Workday (through Paradox), SAP SuccessFactors (through SmartRecruiters), and UKG ship AI for recruiting. None of the releases we reviewed describe a phone call that interviews applicants. Paradox and SmartRecruiters screen by text and chat.

## What are ATS AI agents?

ATS AI agents are software features, built into or sold alongside your applicant tracking system, that complete recruiting tasks rather than only suggesting them. A scheduling agent books the interview instead of showing open slots. A hiring-manager agent collects feedback and approvals instead of sending reminder emails. "Agentic AI recruiting" is the same idea applied across the hiring process.

The word "agent" covers different jobs, though. An agent that moves an approval through Microsoft Teams saves a hiring manager a login, while one that talks to 400 applicants this week replaces hours of recruiter phone time.

## What do the new ATS AI agents actually do?

Here's what each vendor has announced or shipped, based on its own materials.

Vendor

Agents or AI announced

What they automate

Does it run a spoken screening interview?

iCIMS

Sourcing Agent (available now), Hiring Agent in Microsoft Teams (October 2026), Interview Scheduling Agent (expected by end of 2026)

Sourcing outreach, hiring-manager review, feedback, and approvals inside Teams, interview booking and calendar changes

No. The announcement covers sourcing, scheduling, and approvals

Workday (Paradox)

Paradox Conversational ATS (January 2026), Paradox for Workday Recruiting

Apply by text or chat, pre-screening on minimum qualifications, self-scheduling over SMS, WhatsApp, or chat

No. It screens by text and chat. Workday's product page doesn't describe phone or voice screening

SAP SuccessFactors (SmartRecruiters)

Winston Chat, Winston Screen, Winston connected to SAP's Joule agents starting in 2026

Conversational apply, AI-generated screening questions with rankings, scheduling, interview feedback

Not described in SAP's release. SmartRecruiters says Winston Screen can conduct "AI-assisted interviews," so ask whether that means a phone call

UKG

AI-assisted high-volume recruiting (August 2026 release)

AI job recommendations for candidates, AI profile summaries for recruiters, bulk apply to advance up to 100 candidates at once

No. The recruiting features help recruiters process applicants faster

**iCIMS.** The [Intelligent Hiring Platform announcement](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/icims-debuts-its-vision-for-the-future-of-hiring-the-intelligent-hiring-platform-302865673.html) on September 1, 2026 introduced the Hiring Agent, which lets hiring managers review candidates and complete approvals without leaving Microsoft Teams, with iCIMS staying the system of record. The Interview Scheduling Agent checks availability, books sessions, and handles calendar changes. iCIMS followed with its NEXT customer conference on October 8.

**Workday.** Workday closed its Paradox acquisition in October 2025 and [launched Paradox Conversational ATS](https://erp.today/workday-launches-paradox-ats-for-faster-frontline-hiring/) on January 8, 2026 for retail, hospitality, and manufacturing hiring. Candidates search, apply, and schedule through text-based mobile conversations. Paradox does real screening: Workday says it captures answers that ["instantly qualify" candidates against minimum job qualifications](https://www.workday.com/en-us/products/conversational-ai/candidate-experience.html). That's a chat screen, and for many roles it works. [Workday Rising](https://newsroom.workday.com/2026-07-21-Workday-Announces-Rising-2026-Where-Agentic-HR-and-Agentic-Finance-Take-Center-Stage-October-12-15-in-Las-Vegas) runs October 12 to 15 in Las Vegas with agentic HR at the center, so watch for recruiting news there.

**SAP SuccessFactors.** SAP acquired SmartRecruiters in September 2025, and in March 2026 it [described the combined product](https://news.sap.com/2026/03/smartrecruiters-for-sap-successfactors-ai-driven-hiring-connected-hcm/) as single login, synced job and org data, and AI help with scheduling, matching, and interview feedback. Winston and Joule are set to work together as connected agents starting in 2026.

**UKG.** UKG's [August 27, 2026 release](https://www.ukg.com/company/newsroom/ukg-deepens-workforce-operating-platform-ai-built-help-chros-improve-frontline-work) added AI profile summaries and bulk apply for high-volume roles, with recruiters keeping control of decisions.

## Which recruiting task do the agents leave open?

The first conversation with each applicant. In frontline hiring, the expensive step comes after the application and before the interview: someone has to reach the applicant, confirm they have the license, the shift availability, and a way to get to the site, and answer their questions about pay. If that takes three days, plenty of applicants have already taken another job. The first team to call gets the hire.

Look at the table again with that in mind. Scheduling agents assume someone already decided the candidate is worth an interview, and hiring-manager agents only help once a shortlist exists. UKG's bulk apply speeds up applicants a recruiter has already judged. Text and chat screening does cover the first conversation, for candidates who reply to texts, and plenty of them do.

That leaves the applicant who doesn't reply. Some hourly applicants ignore texts from numbers they don't know, and some won't type long answers on a phone between shifts. A two-minute phone call reaches people a text thread loses. We wrote up the trade-off in [why phone calls beat texts for trades hiring](/blog/phone-calls-beat-texts-trades).

## What should you ask before you count on an ATS agent?

Run every agent, from your ATS vendor or anyone else, through the same five questions.

1. **Does it decide or recommend?** An agent that ranks candidates and auto-advances the top tier is making a selection decision. An agent that writes a summary for a recruiter is not.
2. **What writes back to the candidate record?** You want the answers, the transcript, and the reason for any status change stored where your recruiters and auditors already look.
3. **Can a recruiter see why?** If a candidate moved to a new stage, someone should be able to open the record and read the answer that moved them.
4. **How does it reach candidates who don't text back?** Ask for the reply rate on first outreach and what happens after a no-answer.
5. **What does it need from your team to go live?** An integration that needs your HRIS engineers for a quarter won't help with this year's seasonal hiring.

The first question matters more since [Mobley v. Workday](/blog/workday-ai-hiring-lawsuit), where a federal court let an applicant pursue Workday as an "agent" of the employers using its screening tools. The court's reasoning turned on software taking part in the decision to reject people, so prefer agents that recommend and keep a person on every rejection.

## How does a phone interview layer fit with your ATS vendor's agents?

It sits in front of them. [Classet ATS Sync](/product/joy-sync-ats-plugin) puts AI phone interviews inside the ATS you already run. Joy, Classet's AI recruiter, calls candidates the moment they apply, 24/7, asks your questions, and sends your team the summary, recording, and transcript. You choose the trigger per job: on application, at a stage, or on a tag.

The summary, transcript, and recording write back to the candidate record. Knockout results can move a candidate to a stage you configure, and with Job Automations, jobs that sync from your ATS and match a rule get the right interview script attached and Joy turned on. Nothing is rejected by software. Your team decides who moves forward.

Your vendor's agents keep doing what they're built for: the iCIMS Hiring Agent routes approvals through Teams, and Paradox can still schedule the candidates who'd rather text, with Workday or SuccessFactors staying the system of record. ATS Sync adds the phone conversation, which none of the releases above describe.

ATS Sync works with 95+ ATS platforms, including Workday, iCIMS, SAP SuccessFactors, UKG Ready, and Dayforce. Go-live takes one to two weeks, longer for Workday and Dayforce, and no engineers are needed on your side. Across 10,167 post-interview ratings, 88% of candidates rated their interview with Joy positively. ## Common questions

### What AI agents did iCIMS announce?

On September 1, 2026, iCIMS announced its Intelligent Hiring Platform with three agents: a Sourcing Agent (available now), a Hiring Agent that works inside Microsoft Teams (October 2026), and an Interview Scheduling Agent (expected by end of 2026). The announcement doesn't describe screening interviews with candidates.

### Does Workday have an AI recruiting agent that screens candidates?

Workday's Paradox products screen candidates by text and chat. Candidates apply over SMS, WhatsApp, or chat, answer questions about minimum qualifications, and self-schedule interviews. Workday's product materials don't describe phone or voice screening. Workday Rising runs October 12 to 15, 2026, so check for new announcements.

### Do I need a separate AI screening tool if my ATS has agents?

It depends on which task is slowing you down. If approvals and scheduling are the bottleneck, your ATS agents may be enough. If your recruiters spend their week trying to reach applicants for a first screen, a phone interview layer such as [Classet ATS Sync](/product/joy-sync-ats-plugin) runs inside your existing ATS and writes results back to the candidate record.

### Are AI hiring agents a legal risk?

They can be. In Mobley v. Workday, a federal court allowed claims against an AI screening vendor as an agent of the employers using it. Agents that recommend rather than reject, show recruiters the reason for each recommendation, and leave final decisions to people carry less of that risk.

## Key points

- iCIMS, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, and UKG shipped recruiting AI in 2026, mostly for sourcing, scheduling, approvals, and recruiter speed.
- Paradox (Workday) and SmartRecruiters Winston (SAP) screen candidates by text and chat. None of the releases we reviewed describe a phone interview with applicants.
- The first conversation with each applicant is still the step that slows frontline hiring most.
- Ask any agent whether it decides or recommends, what it writes back, whether a recruiter can see why, and how it reaches candidates who don't text back.
- A phone interview layer inside your ATS complements the vendor's agents rather than replacing them.
