Guides & Insights, AI Recruiting

Most lists of AI tools for HR mix forty products that do forty different things, so you finish reading and still don't know what to buy. SHRM's [State of AI in HR 2026](https://www.shrm.org/topics-tools/research/state-of-ai-hr-2026/full-report) report surveyed 1,908 HR professionals and found that 39% of organizations have AI in their HR function. The same report found that 56% of HR functions don't formally measure whether their AI investment worked. My advice is to buy AI for one HR job at a time, pick a tool built for that job, and decide before you sign how you'll know it's working.

Quick answer

The best AI tools for HR teams in 2026, sorted by the job they do: Classet for AI phone interviews in hourly and high-volume hiring, Intelogos for AI workforce analytics and performance insights, Lattice for AI-drafted performance reviews and an HR help desk, Culture Amp for analyzing engagement survey comments, Rippling for AI built into HRIS and payroll, and Workday Illuminate for enterprise HR agents. Start with the job that costs your team the most hours.

## What are AI tools for HR?

AI tools for HR are software products that use large language models or machine learning to do part of an HR task: screening candidates, summarizing feedback, answering policy questions, or analyzing workforce data. In SHRM's 2026 survey, the most common HR uses were recruiting (27% of organizations), HR technology (21%), learning and development (17%), and employee experience (14%). Compliance came in at 2% or less. The useful question is which part of your HR work you want the AI to do, because every tool below covers a different part.

## Classet: AI phone interviews for hourly hiring

Classet is an AI interviewing platform for hourly and high-volume hiring, which is the HR job where SHRM finds AI used most. Joy, Classet's AI recruiter, calls applicants the moment they apply, at any hour, and asks your qualifying questions about licenses, availability, and shift preferences. Recruiters get a structured summary and a recording for each candidate and decide who moves forward. The AI collects the answers and a person makes the call. Classet connects to ATS platforms including Workday, UKG, and iCIMS, and smaller teams can use Classet Hiring Hub as their applicant tracking system.

Across 10,167 post-interview ratings, 88% of candidates rated their interview positively. Self-serve plans start at $249 a month billed annually, and ATS-integrated plans start at $1,995 a month. Classet fits frontline roles in trades, logistics, healthcare, and retail. It isn't built for executive search. We compare the wider recruiting category in [the best AI recruiting software for 2026](/blog/best-ai-recruiting-software).

## Intelogos: AI workforce analytics and performance insights

[Intelogos](https://www.intelogos.com/roles/for-hr) is an AI workforce analytics platform, founded in 2022 and based in New York, that turns everyday work activity into performance and engagement metrics. Lightweight desktop agents record time spent across applications and websites and sort each tool as primary, secondary, distracting, or neutral. Intelogos then rolls that into KPIs for workday, activity, engagement, productivity, and contribution. HR teams can type a question such as "Is anyone on the engineering team showing signs of burnout?" into Ask AI and get an answer drawn from their own data. Generate Insights writes a performance summary with recommendations and risk flags from any page.

For HR, the draw is continuous data on burnout, workload, and flight risk between annual surveys, without a data science team. The tradeoff is that it's activity monitoring, so tell employees exactly what you collect and why before you roll it out. New York, for example, requires employers to give [written notice of electronic monitoring](https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/CVR/52-C%2A2). Intelogos sells per-license monthly plans with a free trial.

## Lattice: AI for performance reviews and an HR help desk

Lattice is a performance management platform, and Lattice AI Agent is built into it. The agent drafts self, upward, and downward reviews from what's already in Lattice (1:1 notes, feedback, goals, and updates), joins 1:1 meetings to capture summaries and action items, and runs an HR Help Desk that answers benefits, PTO, and policy questions from your own documentation. Lattice says the agent is [included with every Lattice subscription](https://lattice.com/platform/ai-agent). It also states that Lattice AI doesn't make performance decisions such as promotions, which stay with managers. Lattice fits best if your reviews already run there, because the drafts are only as good as the feedback people have logged during the year.

## Culture Amp: AI for engagement survey analysis

Culture Amp is an employee engagement and performance platform, and its AI focuses on survey data. [Culture Amp AI](https://www.cultureamp.com/platform/ai) summarizes thousands of open-text survey comments into themes, compares comments across teams, scores sentiment, and offers an AI Coach that turns results into action plans for managers. Culture Amp says the models draw on 1.6 billion data points from a decade of research. If your team runs engagement surveys and then struggles to read 3,000 comments before the action-planning meeting, this is the job it does. It doesn't help much if you survey once a year and rarely act on the results.

## Rippling: AI built into HRIS and payroll

Rippling is an HR, IT, and payroll platform, and [Rippling AI](https://www.rippling.com/blog/introducing-rippling-ai), launched in March 2026, works on top of that live data. Employees can ask why their paycheck changed or how much parental leave they get, and Rippling AI traces the answer across payroll, benefits, and policies. HR admins can drop in a spreadsheet of bonuses, and Rippling AI maps it to employee records, flags missing data, and stages the payroll run for approval. It inherits Rippling's existing permissions, so a manager sees only what they could already see. In September 2026 Rippling added plugins, reusable skills, and automations. It fits companies that want one system of record and would rather not bolt AI onto five separate tools.

## Workday Illuminate: AI agents for enterprise HR

Workday Illuminate is Workday's AI layer for HR and finance. At Workday Rising in September 2025, Workday [announced new Illuminate agents for HR](https://newsroom.workday.com/2025-09-16-Workday-Illuminate-TM-Expands-with-New-AI-Agents-for-HR,-Finance,-and-Industry), including a Performance Agent, a Case Agent for HR service requests, an Employee Sentiment Agent, and a Job Architecture Agent, with availability in 2026. Workday also introduced Flex Credits, a consumption model included in every subscription. Illuminate makes sense for large organizations that already run HR on Workday and want AI inside that system. For smaller teams, it's a heavy way to get a few AI features.

## How do you choose an AI tool for HR?

Choose an AI tool for HR by starting with one job you can measure, then checking data access, decision rights, and compliance before you buy. These five steps keep you out of SHRM's 56%:

1. **Pick the job that costs the most hours.** For hourly employers that's usually screening applicants. For a 300-person software company it might be review season.
2. **Set the success measure before the pilot.** Hours saved per week, time to first contact, review completion rate, or survey action plans shipped. Only 16% of HR functions in SHRM's survey use ROI as a measure.
3. **Check where the data lives.** Tools that run inside your system of record, like Rippling or Lattice, inherit its permissions. Standalone tools need integrations and a clear answer on who can see what.
4. **Keep decisions with people.** Read the vendor's documentation for what the AI decides and what it only drafts or summarizes. For hiring, prefer tools where a recruiter reviews the summary and makes the call.
5. **Check the rules that apply to you.** NYC Local Law 144 requires a bias audit before you use an automated employment decision tool. Colorado's AI Act takes effect January 1, 2027 (see our [Colorado AI Act guide](/blog/colorado-ai-act-hiring)). Monitoring tools may need written employee notice.

Our post on [AI recruiting bias audits](/blog/ai-recruiting-bias-audits-compliant-platform) covers the hiring-specific questions to ask a vendor.

## Common questions

### What is the best AI tool for HR?

The best AI tool for HR depends on the job. For hourly and high-volume hiring, Classet's AI phone interviews reach applicants the moment they apply. For performance reviews, Lattice AI drafts reviews from existing feedback. For engagement surveys, Culture Amp summarizes comments. For workforce analytics, Intelogos turns work-activity data into KPIs and burnout signals.

### How many HR teams use AI?

SHRM's State of AI in HR 2026 report found that 39% of organizations have adopted AI in their HR function and another 7% planned to in 2026. Recruiting is the most common use, at 27% of organizations. 31% of respondents worked at organizations with no plans to launch AI initiatives.

### What is Intelogos?

Intelogos is an AI workforce analytics and performance management platform founded in 2022 and based in New York. Desktop agents record how time is spent across applications, and Intelogos turns that into KPIs for engagement, productivity, and contribution. HR teams can ask questions in plain language to spot burnout or flight risk.

### Is it legal to use AI in hiring?

Yes, with conditions that vary by location. NYC Local Law 144 requires a bias audit and candidate notice before you use an automated employment decision tool. Colorado's AI Act takes effect January 1, 2027. Keeping a person responsible for each hiring decision, and documenting how the tool works, covers most of what regulators ask.

### Can AI replace HR staff?

The tools in this list take over repetitive tasks such as first-round screening calls, comment analysis, review drafts, and policy questions. People still make the decisions. SHRM found AI in HR is concentrated in recruiting and HR technology, with little use in areas such as compliance and employee relations.
